# How To Calculate Gpa In Nigerian Secondary Schools

Students are graded on their GPA, which is an academic metric used to differentiate between different levels of educational attainment.

Some of Nigeria’s most prestigious secondary schools and universities use the GPA system to evaluate students.

The 5.0 and 4.0 grading schemes are the two most common in use in Nigeria. GPA and CGPA grading schemes will be covered in further detail in the following sections.

## What is a grade point average (GPA)?

There are many ways to calculate a GPA, or grade point average, but the most common is by using a formula known as the grading scale.

As a student, one of the most important things to keep track of is your grade point average (GPA). The 4.0 and 5.0 GPA scales are the two most commonly used nowadays.

This is how it works: in every class, students receive a letter grade ranging from A to F or 1 to 100.

Before you get a letter grade or percentage, you get a number grade in the first place (100, A, or 100 percent ).

A quality point is allocated to each of the grade systems. A GPA of 4.0 or 5.0 is considered a quality point. If a school chooses, this quality point can range from 0 to 4 or 0 to 5.

According to the Nigerian education system, the best possible mark for a course is A and 100. A is equivalent to 4 or 5, or their power of two (e.g., 8 or 16) or (10, 15, 20). All of these points are combined together and divided by the total number of credits earned in each course.

## What is a CGPA and how to calculate it?

Cumulative grade point average (CGPA) and overall grade point average (GPA) are often used interchangeably.

Both of these terms refer to a student’s average grades, although they are distinct from each other. A shorter time frame, such as a term or a semester, is reflected in the cumulative grade point average.

A student’s overall GPA includes all of his or her grades from all of his or her classes. All grades from each term or semester are averaged to arrive at an overall grade point average (GPA).

## Why would a Secondary school student need to calculate GPA or CGPA?

Almost all secondary schools utilize a credit system score to determine grades. This credit system is utilized by colleges and universities around the world, and it has become a widely accepted method of evaluating academic success.

Most high schools in Nigeria now use the credit system and require students to submit their cumulative averages; this method is used to evaluate a student’s overall academic performance during the college admissions process.

## How to calulate a GPA and CGPA

For your GPA, you must first know how many credit points each course receives. Let’s imagine you took three courses: Course A, Course B, and Course C. (3 credits). In these classes, your grades were as follows:

Course A – (C (C is 2.0 on the GPA scale)

Course B -(B is 3.0 on the GPA scale)

Course C -(A is 4.0 on the GPA scale)

You may now calculate your CGPA by multiplying your grades by the number of credits you earned in each course.

Calculate the totals and then add them together.

Grade points divided by total credits equals the total number of course credits.

GPA and CGPA for 9 WAEC/NECO subjects on a 4.0 and 5.0 scales are shown in this example.

For a 4.0 GPA Scale.

• Further Mathematics ( 4 Credit)
• Biology ( 3 Credit)
• English ( 4 Credit)
• Computer Science ( 2 Credit)
• Mathematics ( 4 Credit)
• Chemistry ( 3 Credit)
• Economics ( 2 Credit)
• Introductive Technology ( 1 Credit)
• Physics ( 3 Credit)

Grades for each course in a semester

• Physics (C is 3.0 on the GPA scale)
• Introductive Technology (C is 3.0 on the GPA scale)
• Further Mathematics (C is 3.0 on the GPA scale)
• Mathematics – (A is 4.0 on the GPA scale)
• Biology (C is 2.0 on the GPA scale)
• Economics (C is 2.0 on the GPA scale)
• Chemistry (C is 4.0 on the GPA scale)
• English (C is 4.0 on the GPA scale)
• Computer Science (C is 4.0 on the GPA scale)

Calculate by multiplying each course’s grade point average (GPA) by the amount of credit hours it has.

• Further Mathematics = 12
• Mathematics = 16
• Biology = 6
• Economics = 4
• Computer Science = 8
• Physics = 9
• Introductive Technology = 3
• Chemistry = 12
• English = 16

A total of 86 is what you’ll get if you add up all grades.

We divide this number of grade points by the total number of credits of the courses you took in order to get your average GPA.

There were a total of 26 credits in the course taken.

For the average GPA, divide 86 by 26 = 3.30.

Calculate using the 4.0 grading scale and then add 1.0 to the result if you want to use the 5.0 grading scale.

Add one point to your grade point average to convert it to a five-point scale, and you’ll obtain an overall grade point average (GPA) of 4.5.

Having a good grade point average (GPA) is extremely significant when it comes to academics. This is how most businesses value their employees’ performance in order to gain management approval.

## How can I convert my Nigerian GPA to the 4.0 USA scale?

Schools in the United States are graded on a four-point scale, while those in Nigeria are graded on a five-point scale.

If you have the funds and time to devote to this, it’s an easy process. When I applied to the Florida Institute of Technology (FIT) for admission last year, one of the requirements was a credential evaluation.

In this scenario, your transcripts must be delivered to the organizations that offer such services, as most colleges have their own preferences.

As far as credential evaluations go, World Education Services, based in New York, is the most commonly used agency for international students (WES).

Typically, you’ll have your transcripts sent directly from your school to WES in the United States. Applicants are unable to submit their evaluations directly to colleges.

To transmit the paper to your desired US graduate school, WES completes the review. It is their job to analyze your transcripts and then translate them into the American equivalent.

If you want, you can submit your application and make your payment online. If you have a domiciliary bank account, you can also use that to make the payment.

Costs are high, and it takes a long time to go through the entire process

To get the papers to WES, I had to pay for the DHL courier service. They completed the evaluation in around four days of labor.

Also, a copy was delivered to my home in Nigeria at my expense.

Everything is around \$300, I believe.
