Best Soundbars Under 1000

  • Nakamichi Shockwafe Elite 7.2.4 Channel 800W Dolby Atmos/DTS:X Soundbar with Dual 8” Subwoofers (Wireless) & 2 Rear Surround Speakers. Enjoy Plug and Play True 360° Cinema Sound & Room-Shaking Bass

Previously, I utilized Polk, Focal, and Paradigm, and now I use SVS Ultra Tower and SVS 13 Ultra Subs in my current setups.

This sound bar doesn’t sound as good as my six-figure investment in speakers, pre-processor, and amplifiers, but I’m not saying I’ve heard the best.

Living room setups are fantastic, but for some movies, my dedicated theater is a little overkill. I didn’t want to spend the money on a new 7.2.2 sound system because I didn’t like the built-in speakers on my Samsung TV.

Returned: I bought a JBL soundbar, then returned it. It was a total bummer! It was a step up over the television, but I was still lacking. This soundbar was the culmination of all my research.

Will this soundbar be able to compete with the big boys, then? To your surprise, the answer is a resounding yes!!! With a few exceptions.

The subwoofers sounded muddy, excessively loud, and obnoxious right out of the box, and this was my first impression of the overall sound quality.

While this may be a plus for some, I found it horrifying and immediately put on my return hat to express my displeasure with it. However, like most sound and video equipment out of the box, it does not display its full potential, especially when it comes to personal preference..

“Movie” mode was on, which I felt to be intrusive and trying to mimic an IMAX-like cinema experience, to my disappointment. This isn’t only a problem with the primary soundbar; it’s also a problem with all of its subwoofers.

Short story: after some tinkering with the remote control, I discovered DSP Off. Hooray for taking off! The soundstage is good and flat. Sound stage of SVS Not exactly, but it’s still rather remarkable!

You’ll feel like you’re in a little sound bubble thanks to the surround speakers’ excellent imaging.

As an added benefit of Atmos, I don’t hear anything above my head. I have special atmos speakers in my theater, so it’s possible that I’m naive, but I never found myself saying “wow” when a helicopter flew over me.

Make sure you don’t buy this thinking that Atmos will suddenly function. That is not the case. However, in my opinion, this overall soundbar and how it works for the price isn’t a deal breaker.

Even while Nakamichi may have had to make some compromises in order to meet the pricing threshold, this isn’t a slam on them. At greater volumes, the tweeters/high end, on the other hand, can be quite taxing on the ears. My ears don’t hurt even when I crank up the volume on my SVS Speakers to the maximum.

When I crank up the volume on the Nakamichi while watching a movie like Avengers, my ears feel like they’ve been to a concert. My nitpicking aside, this is something I wish I had known when I was doing my research.

Here’s the bottom line:

Pros:

  • Exceptional value for the money
  • Unlike many other soundbars, this one has a high-end appearance.
  • The HDMI inputs all support HDMI 2.2, which provides a wide range of communication choices.
  • Simple to put in place! Speaker brackets are included as well as anything else you’ll need.
  • The wireless connection between the main bar and subs is absolutely rocking strong. There is absolutely no latency or dropouts whatsoever.

Cons:

  • This system sounds a touch boxy and resonant when compared to my SVS setup. Adding more sound-deadening material to each component is probably a good idea.
  • The system plays the sounds when you start a show or media. After a brief pause of 1-2 seconds, the system returns to normal sound. After the initial hitch when starting every show or movie, everything runs well.
  • Everything about the menu is terrible! Perhaps I’m spoiled by the amazing receivers I have that allow me to manipulate the sound through excellent interfaces. Because it’s all LCD, using this one can be a pain, especially when certain items are truncated. Please consider including a menu system on the TV itself with your upcoming soundbar.
  • A true sound stage can’t be achieved because the Left, Center, and Right are crammed into a single unit. Although Nakamichi did a good job of arranging the outside tweeters to provide the appearance of this, a real front LCR arrangement is still preferable.

For those who don’t have a dedicated theater area in their home, this is an excellent option.

  • Bose Smart Soundbar 700

To put it mildly, the setup for this was really difficult. I can understand why someone who isn’t tech-savvy would give a negative rating. It’s not as simple as plugging it in and using it.

So if you’re looking for a plug-and-play solution, this is not it. Setup of the music app on your phone or tablet is required, as is going through the app’s set-up process (music, remote, Alexa, calibrating, etc.). Without the internet or another device, I don’t know if it can be set up? If you can figure it out, I’m stumped.

When I finally realized I needed to be connected to the Ethernet port, it took me a long time to figure it out (does not give a cat5e cable).

I couldn’t find a setting that would allow you to connect wirelessly to a router. It just kept looking for a device to connect to. However, after you’ve set it up, you can connect Bluetooth-enabled devices (phones, tablets, etc.) wirelessly.

Although my internet may have been a factor, the update lasted more than 30 minutes. When I relaunched the program after a bit, it appeared to have loaded. Maybe it got stuck. I’m not sure about that.

It’s convenient to be able to use the same remote control for multiple devices. The only problem I encountered was that the channel buttons didn’t work. But I’m sure there’s a simple solution I can work on at a later time.

Overall, it’s a fantastic piece of music. Before I bought it, I went to the store and listened to both this model and the 500. The 700 had a far better sound, in my opinion.

  • Sonos Playbar – The Mountable Sound Bar for TV, Movies, Music, and More – Black

Good side:

The process of getting everything up and running is quite simple. With Alexa, it’s perfect. Excellent sound quality. Integration with TV is seamless It appears to be of great quality.

What we dont like:

It was expensive. It’s not possible to use the IR receiver in any other orientation. Doesn’t work with the television’s sound display.

Since we got our first Play:5 10 years ago, we’ve been big fans of Sonos. We still think Sonos is the best technological item we’ve ever bought.

Using Alexa’s voice commands to play music has become increasingly convenient for us recently. We’ve even listened to the speaker on the echo dot, despite the fact that it has a noticeably worse quality of sound.

We haven’t used the speaker to ask Alexa queries since the update that enabled connectivity with Alexa.

As a result of these considerations, I acquired a Playbar for my television. With Alexa and the TV on, it was unclear if I’d have to reconfigure it every time I turned the TV on, or how simple it would be to set up.

Once we’ve set it up to operate with our TV, it’s ready to use at any time. The TV’s sound comes on with barely a fraction of a second’s delay.

I don’t have to manually switch on the speaker. It’s also a great fit for Alexa. Whether or not the television is on, you can still listen to music. In order to watch TV while listening to music, you must first turn on the TV.

So that we don’t disturb the neighbors, we’ve tried watching a movie at the night mode. The Sonos app makes it simple to do so.

Beyond the wireless, the Palybar only has an optical link for connecting to the outside world. If you’re worried that your TV doesn’t have an optical connection, you’re not alone; most soundbars from different brands connect via optical connection. My TV is connected through an optical cable.

Alexa/Echo integration was a breeze for me, but I can’t explain how I did it. Using an IR receiver mounted on a bracket and connected to the TV, we discovered that it only functioned when you were at a distance of 5 feet or less from the IR receiver with the speaker sitting more upright.

The IR receiver functioned well from a distance, so we placed the speaker in the same way you would rest it on a table or fireplace mantle. Fortunately, this was the orientation we preferred.

Despite its expensive price, this product is worth the money. The sound quality and features it offers make it a better value than the average soundbar system, in my opinion. It’s up to the person to decide how much more they want to spend.

Soundbars and separate sound systems are more obvious choices for someone who is considering an echo speaker as well as a soundbar. The Echo Dot and the Sonos Playbar, on the other hand, could provide you with the capabilities of a wide range of systems while doing it in a more streamlined fashion.

As far as I’m concerned, the Playbar has a high-end look and feel.

It’s hard to think of a situation where you wouldn’t be satisfied with the Sonos Playbar as a sound bar. The new Alexa/Echo integration of Sonos gadgets dramatically enhances an already excellent product.

This Sonos device is compatible with the Sonos Subwoofer and other Sonos products. Wirelessly, you might link a 5.1-channel audio system to your computer.

Even though we haven’t done this, and probably won’t in the future, the high cost of a large number of Sonos speakers could help balance the effort and price of connecting wires through your walls. It is important to keep in mind that each speaker will still require an outlet.

  • Sony Z9F 3.1ch Sound bar with Dolby Atmos and Wireless Subwoofer (HT-Z9F)

Anyone searching for a great sound bar, but not necessarily the best, should consider this model. My TCL 65R635-CA Roku TV and this sound bar get along like a house and home.

My Alto 9+ soundbar and wireless subwoofer were both instantly updated and downloaded as soon as I connected them via HDMI-eARC on my TV.

In the settings, you’ll have to make a few adjustments, but they’ll be rather straightforward. It was a cinch to get Bluetooth working with Apple AirPlay.

Streaming music over Wi-Fi is also an option. An excellent small remote with a variety of sound options, not to mention Dolby Atmos. Overall, the sound quality is excellent, and I really enjoy using movie mode. Quality and value at an attractive price point are the hallmarks of this product. Amazon.ca has it for as little as $365, but I paid $375.

  • JBL Bar 5.1 – Channel 4K Ultra HD Soundbar with True Wireless Surround Speakers

It’s crucial to keep in mind that the wireless speakers do need to be charged while setting up the system. They need to be charged for three hours.

The speakers last 10 hours on a charge, so I just charge them at night before going to bed. If you unplug them in the afternoon, you’ll have enough time with them. In order to get the most out of your 5.1 audio, you’ll need to replace all of your media (if possible). This is a full 5.1 system. It may not be the most expensive, but it works as a full 5.1 speaker system.

In order to ensure that everything was working properly, I tried out different games and movies. Jurassic Park was a significant film. I expected nothing less from it, and I was not disappointed. Even at a lower volume setting, the bass rumbled, and the surround functioned flawlessly.

The speakers did an excellent job of reproducing the sound. During the pursuit scenario in the Jeep with Jeff Goldblum, the T-Rex roared through all channels, and you could clearly hear his footfall with the bass.

We were in awe of it all. The same might be said about other films, as well Thor: Ragnarok’s soundtrack and on-screen displays of brute force rocked. This is not the first time I’ve said how impressive the sound quality was. Every effect was applied in the right sequence.

I believe that accurate calibration is essential, and it should be done as soon as possible.

The calibrating antenna was set up in front of my seat, and appears to be working as well as possible It’s also possible to modify the surround volume, which I’m currently using at +6. X-Men: First Class is another example.

Magneto put on a power show, and the bass was there to back it up. Because the bass was so loud, I had to put my speakers in “night mode” to listen to it during the day. However, it was a good fit for the situation.

There were no issues either with Pandora or YouTube when I tried listening to a variety of music genres. The center channel produced crystal-clear audio, with instruments sounding terrific and not muffled.

The JBL Bar 5.1 system has exceeded my expectations, and I’m happy to recommend it. There’s no need to worry if you’re still undecided about whether or not to buy.

You’ll be alright as long as you set it up correctly and don’t allow the bass to go too loud. JBL may be able to remedy the modest mid-range issue in the future if this system allows for firmware changes. Because it is little, I use that word. In a well-configured system, it’s almost imperceptible.

Again, can you come up with a better solution? But is it possible to get a laptop for less than $1000? I don’t believe that. A great deal of value and functionality for the money. 3 HDMI inputs, 1 HDMI ARC output. DTS and Dolby surround sound. It’s a wonderful value that the competition doesn’t provide. I’m going to have to get this.

  • Sony Z9F 3.1ch Sound bar with Dolby Atmos and Wireless Subwoofer (HT-Z9F), Home Theater Surround Sound Speaker System for TV Black

The surround sound is perfectly reproduced by this soundbar. The back speakers are small and attractive, and they go well with the soundbar.

It’s a breeze to set up because the system automatically recognizes the speakers and woofers when they’re powered on.

Both of the HDMI ports support 4K, HDR, and Dolby Vision on their respective outputs. While the vertical sound option is enabled, even HD channels on DTH sound great when playing atmos blurays.

Hearing Atmos programs is like seeing an overhead speaker system for the first time. Purchase the back speakers to get the best rear effects. If you’re looking for the greatest soundbar on the market, you can’t go wrong with this one. Sony has once again demonstrated their dominance in the fields of video and audio.

Best Dolby Atmos Soundbar Under 1000

Name Where to buy
  • Samsung Harman Kardon 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos Soundbar HW-Q80R with Wireless Subwoofer, Adaptive Sound, Game Mode, 4K Pass-Through with HDR, Bluetooth & Alexa Compatible
  • JBL Bar 9.1 – Channel Soundbar System with Surround Speakers and Dolby Atmos
  • Samsung Harman Kardon 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos Soundbar HW-Q80R with Wireless Subwoofer, Adaptive Sound, Game Mode, 4K Pass-Through with HDR, Bluetooth & Alexa Compatible

My previous system was a full-fledged 5.1 surround system. My system consisted of a Denon 2310CI, a Polk Audio center channel, Energy satellite speakers, and a subwoofer.

I had problems with the sub not working and with the balance. I decided to do rid of my old stereo system in favor of a soundbar and subwoofer. In light of the long history of soundbars, I believed this one would work well with the subwoofer that came with it.

The installation was straightforward. HDMI IN and ARC OUT were linked between my Xbox One and the TV. DTS and Dolby Digital formats were both supported when I set the Xbox’s audio output to Bitstream. My prior system didn’t support Dolby Atmos, so I knew this one wouldn’t.

However, the sound is a different matter. It doesn’t seem to be consistent in any way. Dialogue might sound warm at low volumes and brittle at high volumes at the same time.

Adjusting the bass and treble is as simple as going from +6 to -6. The sound, on the other hand, doesn’t appear to be affected by this at all. However, the adjustment for the subwoofer works. In terms of tweaks, there aren’t many.

There are four different sound options to choose from. Adaptive, Game, and Standard. None of them have a particularly pleasant sound to them. Is overflowing with treble that cannot be eradicated. You’ll also hear a few squeaks and pops. The 15-year-old receiver sounds better than this soundbar. I’m amazed.

  • JBL Bar 9.1 – Channel Soundbar System with Surround Speakers and Dolby Atmos

I was pleased to be one of the first people to get my hands on one. Unfortunately, there are problems with the surround speakers’ battery charging technology.

As a workaround, I was able to charge the right surround using a micro-USB cable from an old phone charger. (B) The promised battery life of ten hours is far too optimistic, with both rears lasting only about three hours when completely charged.

Sadly, I was unable to complete Avengers: Endgame. Chat, email, and worldwide customer service was contacted. After a week of waiting, I received a response from Asia Pacific support, who referred me back to US support.

There can be no doubt about it. Due to the fact that it was a Prime purchase, this set is being returned. To give it another go, I’ll have to wait until things reopen, or I can check out some of the new Atmos bars that have recently opened. A new product line with QC issues or a rushed product line, hence I’m giving it a lower rating.
